Frequently Asked Questions

What will the acupuncturist do?

During the initial consultation a full health history will be taken. Questions will be asked regarding symptoms, health and lifestyle and the Acupuncture Physician will check your pulse and tongue. This information will then be organized in order to create an accurate comprehensive diagnosis.

How long will a treatment take?

The initial interview and consultation will be followed by an acupuncture treatment. You can expect your first visit to take up to 90 minutes. Follow-up treatments will generally last 50-60 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Some people experience immediate relief while others may take many months to achieve results.

Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute ones.

We generally recommend 2 treatments per week during the first month, more if there is severe pain.

As acupuncture works to address internal cause, in most cases you will need an average of 6-12 treatments for relief, 12-18 treatments for correction and quarterly treatments for maintenance.

How should I prepare?

Wear loose comfortable clothing, shorts or loose pants that roll up are good. Don't eat large meals just before or after your visit. Don't arrive on an empty stomach-eat something light. Avoid consuming alcohol before your treatment and drink plenty of water afterwards. Refrain from overexertion, exercise, or alcohol for up to 6 hours after the visit. Between visits, make note of any changes that have occurred (even subtle ones.)

Do the needles hurt?

Sensations will vary from person to person. Some people may feel slight pain upon insertion, others feel no pain. Certain acupuncture points, due to their location, may be more sensitive than others. The needles are tiny, not much larger than a human hair.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a safe, natural, drug-free and effective form of treatment. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used only once, and then discarded. There are no side effects except that of relaxation and well-being.
